Exploring Spa Styles: A Look at Custom Gunite Spas

From Seamless Integration to Striking Showpieces: A Guide to Custom Spas

Outdoor living spaces have evolved beyond simple patios and pools—they are now extensions of the home, blending architecture, design, and functionality into breathtaking retreats. No longer limited to prefabricated options, homeowners now have the opportunity to break the mold, designing outdoor spaces with as much thought and integrity as the interiors of their homes. Spas, in particular, have become a haven for innovation, transforming backyards into luxurious sanctuaries that are as visually compelling as they are relaxing.

A well-designed spa is more than just a place to unwind—it’s a focal point of luxury, seamlessly blending with its surroundings. At Ventures, every spa we build is made from high-quality gunite, ensuring durability in Michigan’s harsh weather, and full customization. While many of our spas are integrated into swimming pools, others stand alone as statement pieces. In this guide, we explore the different styles of custom spas we’ve designed, highlighting unique features from some of our favorite projects. Which style do you envision in your outdoor living space?

Hidden Spas: Seamless Integration

Hidden spas are designed to blend effortlessly into the pool, creating a smooth and uninterrupted water surface. These spas are concealed within the main body of the pool, a technique requiring precision and expert craftsmanship. Hidden spas are suited to contemporary spaces, minimalist design and understated elegance.

Our Pine Ridge, George and Miller projects are beautiful examples of hidden spas. Click on any project to explore the full build.

Raised Spas: Elevated Aesthetic

Raised spas, or perimeter overflow spas create a striking visual impact by elevating the spa above the pool or patio. This design allows for features like 360-degree spillovers, tiered water effects, and dramatic tile and lighting. Our Sutherland, Valley and Trailwood projects are great examples of outdoor living spaces with beautifully incorporated raised spas.

Pool with an Attached Spa via a Water Bridge with Stepping Stones

For a striking balance between separation and integration, some of our designs feature pools with an attached spa connected via a water bridge with stepping stone pavers. This design maintains a strong visual connection between the pool and spa while allowing for different temperature settings and distinct spaces for a relaxing soak or a cool dip.

Stand-Alone Spas: A Dedicated Retreat

Many homeowners may not want a full-sized swimming pool but still desire a relaxing place to unwind. A stand-alone spa offers the perfect solution, serving as a visually striking and luxurious focal point in any outdoor space. Designed for year-round enjoyment, these spas bring the benefits of hydrotherapy and relaxation without the need for a pool.

Classic Pool and Spa with Spillover

A timeless and elegant design, a pool with an attached spa featuring a one-sided spillover creates a distinct separation between the two while maintaining the continuous circulation and filtration of the water. This design allows for a gentle cascade of water into the pool, enhancing both the visual and auditory appeal.
